Air conditioner shell for industrial vehicles

CASE STUDY

The case presented in this page regards the external shell of an air conditioner machine, for industrial vehicles. Being applied to the external side of lorries and trucks cab, it’s a very aesthetic product.

Product criticities

  • The remarkable size of this product, and the reduced thickness causes the concrete risk of having appearance/dimensional anomalies due to filling issues.
  • For the sake of assembling it to other components, the product has some fastening holes which, in general, are not parallel to each other. This creates important undercuts
  • The product has ain important aesthetic function, and it also has to resist to UV light and atmospheric agents.

Solutions

  • Great importance is reserved to product appearance, creating an attractive line. Two different types of surface finishing are used, making the product partially matte and partially mirror-glossy.
  • In the design phase, the product shape is discussed in cooperation with the customer. Design for Manufacturing principles are then applied, in order to optimize the mould geometry.
  • A careful mould-filling analysis is performed, with the aid of specific FEM software. In this way it the best type of injection is determined for this mould.
  • We put in place our expertise to advise the customer the most suitable thermoplastic material for this application: it’s a special polymer, enriched with elements granting to the product an excellent resistance to UV and sun light.
RESULT

The product is stiff, very nice looking and dimensionally stable. The co-design development has considerably simplified the mould geometry, leading to an important cost reduction.
The mould filling FEM analysis has provided important indications thanks to which it was possible to foresee and fix defects in advance, ultimately contributing to improving product quality.
